Matching is the whole job
When one side is being restored, the finished work is judged against the side next to it, in your mirror, every day. So the session starts with color: your remaining areola is assessed in daylight for its base tone, the warmth or coolness running through it, the width of the border and how sharply that border fades into surrounding skin. Pigment is then mixed toward that, not toward a chart. Nothing about a single-side restoration is standardized, because the thing it has to match is not.
Building dimension on flat tissue
A reconstructed side is usually flat, and the illusion of projection is built with light and shadow rather than with texture. A highlight is placed where light would naturally fall, shadow beneath it, and the areola graded outward so the edge does not read as a drawn circle. Done well it holds up at conversational distance and in a mirror, which is the standard that matters. It is a tattoo, not a prosthetic, and it is honest about that.
Scarred and radiated skin
Reconstructed tissue does not take pigment the way unscarred skin does. Scar tissue can be denser, less forgiving, and patchier in how much it holds, and radiated skin behaves differently again, often needing a lighter hand and more patience across sessions. Both are workable. Both are a reason the plan is made in front of you rather than assumed in advance.
Timing, clearance and how the appointment runs
Reconstruction must be fully healed first, generally at least six months after your final surgery, and always with sign-off from your surgeon or oncology team. Bring any guidance they have given you. The appointment is booked into a private, unhurried slot. You set the pace, you can stop at any point, and nothing happens without being explained first. Most single-side restorations take two sessions, the second placed after healing so color can be judged against the settled result rather than a fresh one.
Questions
3D Nipple Tattoo - One Nipple, answered
The aim is that the two read as a pair at normal distance, which is achievable. An exact match is not promised by anyone honest: the two sides sit on different skin, one scarred and one not, and they will heal differently. The second session exists largely to close that gap.
No. $350 covers one session. Most clients need a second session once the first has healed, to build depth and fine-tune the color match, and it is booked as its own appointment.
Generally a minimum of six months after your final surgery, and always with clearance from your surgeon or oncology team.
Some plans cover areola restoration as part of reconstruction. Ask your provider. You may need a referral or a procedure code from your surgeon.
That is common and it is not a problem. The second side is booked as its own appointment and matched to the first, the same way the first was matched to your original.
