What microblading actually is
Microblading is a manual technique. Pigment is deposited into the upper layers of the skin with a hand tool made up of fine needles arranged in a blade, one stroke at a time. Because each stroke is placed individually, the pattern can follow the growth direction of your existing hair, which is what separates brows that look real from brows that look printed on. It is the right choice if you have some natural hair to build around and you want texture rather than a solid, made-up finish.
How the appointment runs
Plan for two hours. The first thirty minutes are spent mapping: measuring your features, agreeing the shape in pencil, and colour-matching pigment to your hair and skin tone. Nothing is implanted until you have looked in a mirror and said yes to the shape. A topical anaesthetic is applied before and during the work. Most clients describe the sensation as scratching rather than pain.
Healing, and the session that finishes the job
Brows look their darkest for the first three to five days, then lighten considerably as the surface skin exfoliates, so expect them to look patchy around day seven and to settle by week four. That is normal and it is why every new set includes a perfecting session six to eight weeks later, where gaps are filled and the shape is refined against how your skin actually healed. Microblading is not permanent in the tattoo sense: most clients come back for a Brow Color Boost every twelve to eighteen months.
Who microblading suits, and who it does not
Microblading works best on normal to dry skin. On very oily skin or skin with large pores, individual strokes tend to blur and heal soft, and Ombre Brows or Combination Brows will hold their definition far better over the same period. If you are not sure which camp you fall into, book a consultation first. Twenty minutes and $50, credited against your appointment, is a much cheaper way to find out than a set of brows that blurs.
Questions
Microblading, answered
$550 at Pretty In Ink, which covers the two-hour appointment, the pigment, and the mapping. Your perfecting session six to eight weeks later is a separate $150 Brow Touch Up.
Typically one to three years before it fades enough to want refreshing, depending on your skin type, sun exposure and skincare. Oily skin and acid-based skincare both shorten that considerably.
Most people find it very manageable. Topical numbing is applied before the first pass and re-applied during, and the sensation is usually described as light scratching or pressure.
Sometimes, but old pigment has to be assessed in person first. If the previous work is too dark, too grey, or badly shaped, saline removal sessions may be needed before anything new goes in.
